How To Start A Trading Post on Facebook and Buy/Sell/Trade Great Junk

how to start your own online garage sale with a facebook trading post group

Are you one of those people who like a good 2nd hand store, or garage sale, or even better an estate sale?  I am.  I love the great deals to be had in these places and I love the fun of the hunt.  That feeling of never knowing what great item you will find next and at "oh such a great price."  I was laid up last spring with a compressed disc in my neck and couldn't do much or go anywhere to speak of.  That was hard on me especially since it was junking time for me.  I did find a way to satisfy my junking desire despite my condition though.  I decided to start a Trading Post group on Facebook.  I imagined a few housewives trading/buying/selling their stuff on this page.  I figured I would invite a few people who I knew would be interested (mostly crafty people like me)  It grew much larger than I ever imagined.

This beauty was offered for such a great price

That group has been up and going now for over a year and it has grown to over 1600 people buying/selling/trading their stuff.  There are now trading post groups cropping up all over this part of Texas as the idea takes root.  There are even specialized groups dealing only with poultry, or horses, or vehicles.  It is fun and it is a great way to have a garage sale without so much work.  You just take a picture of your items, post them with a price and let the people come to you.  Once your item is gone then you remove the post. All posts must be local.  They even come pick it up at your convenience.  How easy is that?  There have been great deals happening all year.    To date, we have had furniture, clothing, baby items, vehicles, tractors, boats, houses, pets, hay, jobs, and lots of other items too.  The group page has served as a great place for small local businesses to advertise their specials and lost pets have been found as a result of the page.  It has been a great place for our community.

Another great item posted on Seymour Trading Post

I have learned a lot of lessons during the past year of being the creator/administrator of this page.  I started with really simple rules and those have had to grow.  I have had to learn how to protect my group from those who would like to take advantage with their scams and their spam. (we even had someone trying to sell sex toys. Oh my!  My eyes!)  It has been quite a year of learning, growing, and fun trading/buying, and selling.   If you would like to benefit from some of my lessons then I am offering a free pdf ebooklet.  In the booklet, I walk you step by step on how to start the group page how to set it up and I share my rules, and lots of extra tips that will help you and your community navigate the world of Trading Posts on Facebook.  I will add that there have been others who have scoffed at my rules and started their own trading posts (rule free) only to find out a few months later why I have them in place.
I encourage others to start trading posts and I support them even if they are right here in my own town.  I figure the more the merrier and that has proven to be true. I have learned a lot and I am happy to share what I have learned from my group.  If you would like a copy of my free pdf ebooklet then you can find it by clicking How to Start Your Own Facebook Trading Post
I would love a comment letting me know how you liked it. Happy trading.

I really, really love the second piece. I love yard sales but can't do the heat so I stick to indoor flea markets and thrift stores these days. Thanks for sharing.

maybe a friend will help you out and start one near you. They are lots of fun. It would lessen the work if more than one friend would administrate the group. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Nezzy, your free coopy is on its way. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I had to go out of town to help a friend with a large traditional garage sale of all things. Haha. Believe me when I say the Cyber way is Sooooo much easier. lol. Hope you enjoy your booklet.

I'm from the Sunshine Coast of BC..and we have several Facebook pages like what you've started. The biggest one is now at almost 3000 people, the second one at 1500. I LOVE it. I"ve stopped hosting my own garage sales, and now just list items online. They sell quickly and easily. It's been a learning curve on how to deal with people and their different views on how a sale should happen, but overall, just plain fun. Highly recommend this for anyone wanting to start on in their town...:)

Great! 3000 people is huge! I bet you have learned a lot too. I am with you. It is so much easier to list it online than to have a traditional garage sale. I just did a traditional one this past weekend with a friend and it was hard work. We listed all the leftover large items online and sold them all easily and quickly. Lots easier. I bet it isn't long before everyone is doing it online.

Hi Debra,

Thanks so much for this info... and I will get your ebook... thank you in advance!

One question... is there any way to do this where I could make some money for the time involved? I really want to start one where I live... but honestly can not donate this much time unless I get some money for it, so just curious if you have any ideas.

Thank you!!

The only way I could see that happening would be if you charged a fee somehow for people to join or if you created some kind of app like the games use. I didn't think this out when I started mine so a bit late now especially with 5000 members now. I have had the benefit of finding some great deals on things but I feel there should be a way to monetize one for an administrator of one of these but I just haven't had the time to research it. It does grow to be a lot of work so think it through or at least get some like minded friends to help you admin it. You don't know how many times I have considered deleting mine after being flamed in an email because I dared to expect someone to follow the rules on my page of after hours and hours of deleting old posts that the poster was too lazy to delete. I would love to hear if you find a way to do it.
